The Reasons Behind the Dismissal of Hunter Biden’s Tax Charges on Thursday Evening

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika made the decision to dismiss two misdemeanor tax charges against Hunter Biden on Thursday evening.

This action followed a request from the recently appointed Special Counsel David Weiss. Weiss sought the dismissal of these charges, which originated from Hunter’s now-defunct plea deal.

In late July, a proposed plea deal involving Hunter’s alleged tax offenses and other illicit activities fell apart. This happened after Noreika sought clarification on the extent of immunity provided by the deal. The structure of the deal involved Hunter pleading guilty to the now-dropped tax misdemeanors and acknowledging facts related to a gun charge. Approval of this deal would have likely ensured that the son of the president avoided imprisonment. Additionally, according to sources close to Hunter, this deal would have served as a shield against any potential future legal actions targeting him, effectively functioning as an implied pardon.

Noreika temporarily halted the plea deal, leading Hunter to assert his innocence. The judge then advised both federal prosecutors and Hunter’s legal team to revisit and refine the specifics of the plea deal. A twist in the story emerged the previous Friday when Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Weiss as special counsel.

By the following Tuesday, Weiss’ team made a declaration in court. The plea deal, along with its associated diversion program, was officially “now-withdrawn” and had “never gone into effect.” This means that neither party is bound by its terms, as reported by CNN.

“CNN reported that Hunter’s legal representatives agreed with Weiss’ proposal to dismiss the two tax misdemeanors. Noreika approved this joint request on Thursday.

Critics of the special counsel argue that this new case status strengthens the protective barrier around both Hunter and his father. This could potentially hinder congressional testimonies from key figures.

David Marcus, a columnist for DailyWire+ Reader’s Pass, noted, “Both Garland and Weiss were set to testify before Congress in the fall to address the whistleblower allegations, but now the stage is set for these so-called Justice officials to gravely shake their heads and intone, ‘I cannot comment on an active investigation.'”

Meanwhile, the House Oversight Committee has committed to investigating the financial transactions of the Biden family. Their objective is to determine if foreign entities targeted the Bidens, if President Biden’s integrity is compromised, and if national security is at risk. The committee also aims to collaborate with the House Committees on Judiciary and Ways and Means to uncover any misconduct within the Justice Department and hold accountable those who misuse law enforcement powers.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer stated, “This move by Attorney General Garland is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup in light of the House Oversight Committee’s mounting evidence of President Joe Biden’s role in his family’s schemes selling ‘the brand’ for millions of dollars to foreign nationals.”
