Andy Beshear, Kentucky’s popular Democratic governor, is in disagreement with his own party regarding medical treatments for transgender minors.
Despite being a Democrat leading a deep-red state in the Bible Belt, Beshear consistently maintains one of the nation’s highest approval ratings for a sitting governor.
Recently, he refuted claims from Republicans that he supports sex change surgeries for children in a YouTube video, countering Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s attacks on his position as untrue.
Beshear clarified that he has never supported gender reassignment surgery for kids, and such procedures do not take place in Kentucky.
While opponents have circulated misrepresentations of his stance, Beshear’s campaign manager, Eric Hyers, made it clear that the governor does not support gender reassignment surgeries for minors and always stands by parents’ decisions for their children.
A significant moment in this issue was when Governor Beshear vetoed a bill that aimed to ban gender transition surgeries for minors and limit discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.
His opponents pointed to this veto to support their claims about his stance on childhood gender transition surgery, but Beshear explained that the decision was based on his concern for parental rights and the mental health of children in his state.
The upcoming gubernatorial race between Beshear and Republican challenger Daniel Cameron is drawing considerable attention as it is seen as a potential bellwether for the 2024 elections.
