David Weiss, the US Attorney for the District of Delaware, has broken his silence regarding the investigation into Hunter Biden. Weiss, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump, has been supervising the inquiry into allegations of tax evasion and illegal firearm possession by President Joe Biden’s son.
Responding to whistleblowers’ damning claims of political interference, Weiss released a letter last Friday. These whistleblowers, including Gary Shapley Jr., who led the IRS portion of the investigation, testified before Congress, asserting that Weiss faced limitations in his investigative authority and consistent undermining from Department of Justice officials. They also alleged that Weiss’s request for special counsel authority was denied.
In his letter, Weiss refuted these allegations, asserting that he holds “ultimate authority over this matter, including responsibility for deciding where, when, and whether to file charges.” He clarified that his charging authority is confined to his home district in Delaware, and it is customary to collaborate with other U.S. Attorney’s offices if a case falls under their jurisdiction. Weiss also stated that the Department of Justice has assured him that he can be granted Special Attorney status by the Attorney General if charges need to be filed in other districts.
Addressing the whistleblower claims, Weiss affirmed that the Justice Department did not retaliate against the IRS whistleblowers and that he was not hindered in his investigative efforts. He emphasized his commitment to safeguarding confidential law enforcement information and deliberative communications related to the case.
The Hunter Biden investigation has faced scrutiny since the recent announcement of a plea agreement by the Justice Department. The agreement entails Hunter Biden pleading guilty to two misdemeanor counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax and one charge of possessing a firearm while addicted to or unlawfully using a controlled substance. This plea agreement is expected to spare Hunter Biden from jail time, with his first court appearance scheduled for July 26th.
Representatives Jim Jordan, James Comer, and Jason Smith have expressed concerns about potential politicization and misconduct within the investigating agencies. They called for transparency and equal enforcement of the law, emphasizing the importance of accountability and holding individuals responsible.
The committees led by these representatives have requested interviews with Weiss and more than a dozen officials from the Justice Department, IRS, and Secret Service. The purpose of these interviews is to delve deeper into the allegations of politicization and misconduct throughout the lengthy investigation into the president’s son.
Weiss’s revelations shed light on the intricate nature of the ongoing Hunter Biden investigation. Despite the challenges and allegations he has faced, Weiss remains dedicated to his role and responsibilities as the investigation continues.
