Special Counsel John Durham encountered sharp criticism regarding his work and reputation during his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.
In a tense exchange with Democratic Representative Steven Cohen, Durham’s concluding response garnered applause from both committee members and the audience.
Cohen had cast doubt on Durham’s work, but Durham remained resolute, emphasizing his commitment to integrity and his regard for the opinions of respected individuals and God.
Cohen attempted to undermine Durham’s findings by pointing out that he was appointed by former President Donald Trump to oversee the review of the FBI’s Operation Crossfire Hurricane. However, Cohen neglected to mention that Durham’s appointment had bipartisan support from Congress.
Cohen also questioned Durham about Trump’s criticisms of former Attorney General Bill Barr. Durham maintained that such discussions were beyond the scope of his ongoing investigation.
Furthermore, Cohen inquired about a meeting at Trump Tower between Durham and the former President. Durham clarified that his investigation was focused solely on the “conduct of the intelligence community agencies” rather than matters previously investigated by other entities such as the House, Senate, or former Director Mueller.
When Cohen asserted that Durham’s investigation had failed to produce significant results, Durham calmly responded, “Don’t you think that the intelligence communities, the FBI, and others who gathered this information and did good work should be included in your balanced report?”
During Cohen’s extensive and critical remarks about Durham’s work, the Congressman insinuated that Durham’s association with the former President was permanently damaging his reputation.
Chairman Representative Jim Jordan reacted to Cohen’s tirade by humorously remarking, “Can we assume the gentleman [Cohen] is still undecided about his feelings toward the former President?” This comment elicited chuckles from the audience.
Jordan then granted Durham an opportunity to respond. The Special Counsel reiterated his unwavering faith and determination, stating, “I am primarily concerned about my reputation among the people I respect, my family, and my Lord. I am entirely comfortable with how they perceive me, sir.”
