Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) faced criticism after asserting that Democrats were responsible for safeguarding the economy from the consequences of Republican initiatives and policies.
Jeffries’ claim caught the attention of Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, SpaceX, and Tesla, who responded to the statement.
Following the passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act by the House, which suspended the debt ceiling until January 1, 2025, Jeffries took to Twitter to express his views.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) presented the legislation as a hard-fought compromise reached among Conservative Republicans, Liberal Democrats, and President Joe Biden.
In his tweet, the New York representative stated, “We rescued America from the extreme right-wing scheme to derail the economy…”

Musk challenged Jeffries to provide evidence for his statement, asking, “What specific actions are they taking to deliberately harm the economy?”

Significantly, Jeffries chose not to respond to Musk’s tweet, which quickly amassed 1.7 million views.
Republicans who endorse the budget bill highlight its provisions for spending caps and the inclusion of new work requirements for welfare recipients.
Critics of the legislation point out that it does not place any limits on the rapidly growing national debt, which currently stands at $31.38 trillion.
After weeks of negotiations, the bill managed to secure sufficient bipartisan support and advanced through the House, making its way to the Senate. Fiscal conservatives within the Republican Party criticized the bill for its projected $4 billion increase to the national debt, while progressives argued that the budget fails to adequately address “Green” energy initiatives.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on the legislation on Thursday evening.
