Governor Kay Ivey, a Republican from Alabama, responded passionately to ESPN’s coverage of her new legislation that prohibits biological men from participating in women’s sports at the collegiate level. In a strongly-worded tweet, she requested a correction of their wording.
Originally, ESPN reported on Tuesday that “Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed legislation on Tuesday that will ban transgender women from playing on female sports teams in college.”
In swift response, Governor Ivey took aim at the sports outlet, stating, “Allow me to rectify that, @espn,” and proceeded to modify the terminology from “transgender women” to “biological men.”

Ivey, on Tuesday, approved a legislation that forbids biological males from participating in female sports teams at colleges in Alabama. This comes after she had previously prohibited biological boys from playing in girls sports at K-12 schools in 2021.
In a statement following the enactment of the bill, Ivey asserted, “Let me be clear, if you are biologically male, you will not be eligible to compete in women’s and girls’ sports in Alabama. This is fundamentally about fairness.”
