New Leftist Chicago Mayor Blames City’s Crime on Businesses Not Paying Enough Taxes

Chicago’s newly elected far-left Mayor, Brandon Johnson, has blamed businesses for the city’s crime problem, claiming that large corporations in Illinois don’t pay enough in taxes, according to the Daily Mail. Johnson, who is progressive and was endorsed by Bernie Sanders, said that disinvestment led to poverty, which ultimately resulted in violence.

However, he did not cite a source for his claim. Johnson defeated former CEO of Chicago Public Schools, Paul Vallas, who was backed by the police union. He plans to raise an additional $80 million for the city by raising taxes but insists that he won’t raise property taxes. Johnson believes the focus should be on addressing the root causes of criminality, such as investing in people, correlating youth employment and violence reduction, and providing mental health care services.
