Illinois GOP Rep. Darin LaHood has some tough questions for the FBI. And they need to be answered ASAP! According to a report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI acted unlawfully when it used Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978. This act allows targeted surveillance of foreign persons located outside the U.S. with the help of electronic communications service providers to gather foreign intelligence.

The FBI misused Section 702 by searching repeatedly for a member of Congress that they had no business looking for, according to the intelligence report. LaHood is confident that he is that wronged person. He declared this during the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence hearing, saying that the FBI’s inappropriate querying of him repeatedly by name is “an egregious and a violation not only that degrades the trust in FISA, but is viewed as a threat to the separation of powers.”
Committee Chairman Mike Turner chimed in, saying that LaHood’s statement highlights the fears and mistrust that many Americans have about the FBI’s leadership. The FBI needs to come clean and answer the questions LaHood has posed. As head of the working group on renewing Section 702, LaHood won’t stop until the American people get the explanations they deserve!
