Retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn is on another heroic mission after filing a lawsuit against the federal government. He seeks damages for the wrongful and malicious prosecution he suffered, according to his attorneys. They argue that Flynn was falsely branded as a traitor to his country, lost business opportunities worth tens of millions of dollars, and spent substantial amounts of money defending himself.
Flynn’s complaint is in connection with the Department of Justice’s prosecution of him for an interview he had with the FBI in 2017. Although he initially pled guilty, he requested to withdraw from the plea agreement after the emergence of exculpatory evidence. The DOJ eventually dropped the charges against him after admitting that the prosecution lacked merit.
Flynn’s legal team cites a DOJ motion from then-US Attorney Timothy Shea that reveals the government’s lack of belief that Flynn’s statements were material, and therefore, the felony charge was unwarranted. His legal team contends that the prosecution should never have happened, and he hopes to receive compensatory damages that exceed $50 million, in addition to his legal fees and any other court-determined relief.
Jesse Binnall of the Binnall Law Group, representing Flynn, did not mince his words. He criticized the federal government for politically motivated persecution of an American hero, saying that what the Deep State did to General Flynn should never happen to another American, EVER.
In our opinion, General Flynn’s complaint is essential to protecting the rights of every American. We must not allow our leaders to use their power against any citizen unjustly.
