A Mexican restaurant in Arizona has gone viral after its owner announced he would provide free meals to ICE agents and federal law enforcement officers.
Jorge Rivas, a Salvadoran immigrant and the owner of Sammy’s Mexican Grill in Catalina, Arizona, publicly stated that all ICE agents and federal officers are welcome to eat at his restaurant at no cost. Rivas, who immigrated to the United States legally, said the decision was meant to show appreciation and respect for law enforcement.
Rivas emphasized that these agents “will be treated with respect as they deserve.”
The restaurant gained national attention after Rivas made the offer during an interview that was translated into English and widely shared on social media. In the interview, he made his stance clear, saying, “Everyone who works for ICE, all federal agents can come to Sammy’s Mexican Grill. Here they will be treated with respect and as they deserve.”
The video sparked strong reactions online. While many praised Rivas for his support of ICE, others responded with backlash. Critics on the left quickly targeted Rivas and his business, calling for a boycott of the restaurant.
Rivas dismissed the criticism, accusing his detractors of suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” and said he would not back down from his position.
At the same time, conservatives rallied behind the restaurant, encouraging people to visit and support the business.
Rivas later expanded on his views during an appearance on “The Ray Stevens Show,” where he explained that his support for ICE stems from his own experience as a legal immigrant. He said he believes strongly in the rule of law and feels gratitude toward those responsible for enforcing it.
“I know firsthand what it means to come here the right way,” Rivas said.
Despite the controversy, Rivas remains firm in his decision, stating that his restaurant will continue to welcome ICE agents and federal law enforcement with free meals and respect.
