Over 230 million Americans are preparing for a large winter storm, with forecasters predicting significant snowfall and hazardous ice conditions. At least twelve states have declared disasters or emergencies in anticipation of this weather system, which is projected to extend from New Mexico to Virginia by Saturday. The storm is expected to reach the Northeast by Sunday, bringing extreme cold and dangerous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

This impending storm follows a powerful Arctic system that recently affected New England, causing major traffic disruptions and accidents on icy roads.

Air travel is already being impacted, with more than 800 flights delayed or canceled on Friday as the storm approaches, as reported by FlightAware.

Forecasters predict the storm will begin on Friday and continue through Monday, potentially affecting a 1,500-mile stretch of the country with over a foot of snow and widespread ice. States like Texas and Oklahoma are likely to be among the first to feel the storm’s impact, with the weather service warning that icy roads could pose serious dangers.

As the storm moves eastward, it is expected to bring a debilitating mix of ice and snow from Oklahoma to Washington, D.C., and into the Northeast, where cities such as New York and Boston may receive around a foot of snow over the weekend.

The cities anticipated to be most affected include:

  • Oklahoma City
  • Dallas–Fort Worth
  • Little Rock
  • Tupelo, Mississippi
  • Nashville
  • Cincinnati
  • Pittsburgh
  • Charlotte
  • Richmond
  • Washington, D.C.
  • New York
  • Boston
