Republicans have initiated legal action against Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting strategy following a significant win for Proposition 50.
Newsom advocated for the proposition, arguing it would empower Californians to counter President Donald Trump’s policies by altering congressional representation. The measure succeeded with 63.8% support and 36.2% opposition, based on over 75% of expected votes counted after polls closed Tuesday.
‘It’s time to defend your racial gerrymandering in federal court where you can’t hide behind the skirts of judges you personally appointed,’ the lawsuit states.
The proposition is projected to enable Democrats to redraw California’s congressional districts, potentially securing the party at least five additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. The lawsuit seeks to delay the law’s implementation beyond the deadline that could influence the midterm elections.
According to the lawsuit, the redistricting plan is unconstitutional, claiming it breaches the 14th and 15th Amendments by drawing districts based on race, specifically targeting Hispanic voters.
“While the Constitution grants states the authority to design congressional districts, the Supreme Court has ruled that states cannot segregate citizens into different voting districts based on race without compelling evidence to justify such actions,” the lawsuit asserts.
In response, Newsom’s office mocked the lawsuit’s proponents.

“We haven’t reviewed the lawsuit, but if it’s from the California Republican Party and Harmeet Dhillon’s law firm, it’s destined to fail. Good luck, losers,” the statement declared.
Attorney Mark Meuser replied, “See you in court, Gavin. It’s time to defend your racial gerrymandering in federal court where you can’t hide behind the skirts of judges you personally appointed.”

Trump criticized Democrats just before the election, alleging the process was rigged.
“The Unconstitutional Redistricting Vote in California is a GIANT SCAM, as the entire process, especially the voting, is RIGGED,” he stated on social media. “All ‘Mail-In’ ballots, where Republicans in that State are ‘Shut Out,’ are under serious legal and criminal scrutiny.”

The push for the proposition is viewed by many as part of Newsom’s strategy to secure the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
